DIEGO’S STROKES OF GENIUS

At the end of the 1980s, on December 16, the world champions of Argentina are preparing to start the adventure in the Golden Cup of world champions that many will remember better with the name of “Mundialito” an invitation tournament organized in Uruguay in which the national teams that at that date boasted the title of world champions (Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Italy and Germany) as well as the vice-world champions of the Netherlands who replaced the England national team which declined the invitation to participate extended by the Uruguayan organizing committee. To test his fitness, Argentina played a friendly against Switzerland in Cordoba. In Argentina there is Diego Armando Maradona who had made his debut in the albiceleste in 1977 at the age of 17 when Luis Menotti included him during the friendly with Hungary. Although he did not participate in the 1978 Argentine World Cup, Diego, in 1979, delights, with his games, in the world championships U-20 played in Japan and overwhelming by Argentina. On December 16, 1980 Menotti tried a formation that together with captain Passarella and other world champions integrated the youngest, but always world champions, Maradona, Barbas and Ramon Diaz and it was the latter who scored the first goal of the match that ended with a peremptory 5 – 0 for the Argentines. On that match shone the unrepeatable flair of the twenty-year-old Maradona. First, on the developments of a corner kick he hits the post with a header to the right of the Swiss goalkeeper and then drops out a sumptuous play from which the first goal springs. He receives the ball with a transverse touch of a teammate has three opponents around him. The direct mocks him with a fake on the ball that serves to launch himself, even more, into the heart of the Swiss penalty area. Hence the most immediate thing is to place it with a cross. He didn’t. He sees Ramon Diaz arrive at the level of the penalty spot and in place of the simple cross starts a “rabona” that reaches exactly on Diaz’s head almost at the height of the penalty spot. The classic ball to push only to the bottom of the football goal.

But it’s not over. It can’t end like this when Diego is, as almost always, on the day. Then it happens that he gets the ball from Valencia. It is always located at the top of the left area of Switzerland. He always has three opponents against who are mocked with a precise left that ends up at the intersection of the posts. 3-0 almost normal but perhaps, indeed certainly, this can only be the norm for him, “El Diez”.

The memory of that match also passes through the pennant that Argentina captain Passarella handed over to the Swiss captain while Diego’s wonders are immortalized in the remaining footage and in the hearts of those who love this unattainable champion.
