[…] Qualcuno lo considera il più grande talento del calcio tedesco dopo Beckenbauer.

[…] Netzer appose sotto il Mondiale 1974 un autografo piccolo piccolo, appena ventidue minuti nella disgraziata partita persa contro i “cugini” dell’Est. […] Nelle vesti di sontuoso regista Netzer prese per mano la Germania Ovest due anni prima di Monaco ‘74, portandola al meritatissimo successo europeo. All’epoca Gunther, nato a Mönchengladbach il 14 settembre 1944, aveva ventotto anni ed era nel pieno di una splendida maturità atletica e agonistica. Ma era anche già esploso il dualismo con un altro asso sublime, Wolfgang Overath. […] Helmut Schön, Ct tedesco, decise di farli convivere. […] Nel 1972 Overath era reduce da un infortunio e Netzer, libero da ombre, col carrarmato Wimmer al proprio servizio volò ad altezze stratosferiche.

[…] Netzer da quel momento in poi restò fuori, la superGermania alla fine piegò meritatamente la grande Olanda di Cruijff.

[…] Cresciuto nel vivaio del Borussia, ne era stato il regista e trascinatore per dieci anni, dal 1963 al 1973, vincendo due titoli nazionali, nel 1970 e nel 1971 e una Coppa di Germania nel 1973. Il suo concentrato di arte e potenza si trasferì per tre stagioni in Spagna, dove ingaggiò memorabili duelli con il Barça di Cruijff, facendo man bassa di successi: due titoli (’75 e ’76) e due Coppe di Spagna (’74 e ’75).
