[…] Le cronache fanno risalire la nascita del calcio professionistico statunitense all’idea avuta da William B. Cox, organizzatore di baseball, e rielaborata da Luigi Scarambone. Ad inizio 1960 Bill Cox era impegnato ad individuare nuove attività sportive da lanciare e valorizzare in grande scala. La prima iniziativa ebbe come oggetto una sfida di calcio tra Roma e New York, provando ad avvicinare i “pionieri” statunitensi agli esperti italiani.

[…] Da qui partì il progetto di un torneo calcistico a livello internazionale, denominato International Soccer League, con cadenza annuale a New York con la partecipazione di diversi club europei divisi in gironi.

[…] La Sampdoria rientra tra i club partecipanti, l’unica italiana, alla prima edizione risalente al 1960, piazzandosi a testa alta al terzo posto. […] I colori blucerchiati ebbero un meraviglioso impatto anche con Bill Cox, il quale, al momento dell’inaugurazione, decise di farsi fotografare con un grande bandierone blucerchiato come sfondo. Nella gloriosa storia della Sampdoria andiamo ad aggiungere la presenza nel giorno di nascita del calcio targato USA.
