La storia del Peñarol, mitica squadra d’Uruguay

La storia del Peñarol, mitica squadra uruguaiana, raccontata da Il Torinese. Ecco un estratto.

[…] Il nome Peñarol , infatti, deriva da Pinerolo e lo si deve a Giovan Battista Crosa che nel 1765 arrivò a Montevideo e fondò- insieme ad altri conterranei – il quartiere che , storpiando il nome del comune situato allo sbocco in pianura della Val Chisone, nel tempo, è diventato il “barrio” Peñarol.

[…] La passione per i “fotbaleur” , nel caso, ha fatto il resto. Così, quello che nel 1891 era stato fondato a Montevideo come “Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club” (CURCC), squadra di fùtbol della capitale uruguaiana, nel 1913, cambia nome in “Club Atletico Peñarol”. In breve, questa “instituciòn deportiva” diventò presto la miglior squadra del Sudamerica, complice il ciclo del grande Uruguay che tra il 1930 ed il 1950 vinse due edizioni dei Mondiali. Quando la finale della Coppa del mondo venne giocata in Brasile, nella storica data del 16 luglio 1950, quando la “Celeste” nazionale uruguagia sconfisse 2 a 1 la Seleção dei padroni di casa, sprofondando nella disperazione il Maracanà, il Peñarol aveva già conquistato 17 campionati d’Uruguay e forniva alla nazionale giocatori del calibro di Obdulio Varela e Juan Alberto Schiaffino, che poi venne a giocare in Italia, nel Milan. Nel biennio 1960-61 il Peñarol salì in vetta al mondo del pallone, vincendo due Coppe Libertadores (la Champions sudamericana) e una Coppa Intercontinentale. Così i “carboneros” entrarono nella storia del calcio. Nel 1966 arrivò la doppietta: Libertadores e Intercontinentale. Doppietta replicata sedici anni dopo, nel 1982.
