GLIEROIDELCALCIO.COM – Era cresciuto così, con quel suo aspetto particolare che lo metteva in risalto in un mondo di calciatori quasi tutti uguali. Nobby Stiles, l’incontrista dell’Inghilterra mondiale del 1966, si è spento ieri all’età di 78 anni. Un giocatore diverso dagli altri, un giocatore che portava una dentiera che toglieva all’occorrenza, quasi a spaventare gli avversari. I denti li aveva persi quando era ancora un bambino che calcava i campi sterrati di Collyhurst, quartiere operaio di Manchester; la vista non l’aveva mai aiutato tanto, costringendolo all’uso delle lenti a contatto per tutta la carriera.

Nonostante questo, Nobby Stiles rimane nella storia del calcio inglese come il giocatore che annullò il fortissimo Eusebio nella semifinale mondiale del 1966. Durante la sua carriera, oltre a quel titolo che rimane l’unico dei “maestri” britannici, anche una Coppa dei Campioni, la storica coppa del 1968, ottenuta con il suo Manchester United proprio nel tempio di Wembley e sempre davanti alla perla nera del Mozambico.
