Brentford, la formazione di Londra che torna in Premier dopo 74 anni

La storia del Brentford, la sesta squadra di Londra che riesce a tornare in Premier League dopo ben 74 anni. Un estratto dell’articolo di Repubblica.

[…] Ronald fissa il vecchio ingresso dello stadio Griffin Park, con la scritta, oramai scolorita, Brenford Fc. Una struttura casalinga, da circa 10mila posti, incastrata tra le case. Un’istituzione di questa lillipuziana e tranquilla area residenziale nella profonda perfieria ovest di Londra. Leggenda e storia vuole che fu proprio qui, dove il Tamigi allora è più basso, che Giulio Cesare attraversò il fiume durante l’invasione britannica dei romani nel 54 a.C.. Ma il Griffin Park sta per essere demolito. Perché il nuovo stadio è il Brentford Community, a circa un chilometro e mezzo da qui. […] E fa niente che non è il vecchio Griffin Park, dove il Brentford ha giocato dal 1904 fino al 2020 e che è uno stadio straordinario. Se non altro perché era l’unico di Inghilterra con ben quattro pub diversi ai quattro angoli della struttura all’esterno. Cheers! Il nome dello stadio, Griffin, difatti deriva da una di queste “public houses”, ovvero il Griffin pub, dove è stato fondato il club nel 1889. È mezzogiorno e Ronald decide di tornare anche al vecchio pub di quartiere, all’angolo dello stadio. Dove, a 91 anni, ordina e gusta mezza pinta di birra ale bitter.

[…] Se oggi il Brentford è tornata in Premier League, dopo quasi otto decenni, il merito non è solo della sconfinata passione dei tifosi e della vittoria nei play-off contro lo Swansea lo scorso 29 maggio per 2-0 a Wembley. Ma anche di quegli stessi giocatori che all’epoca si piazzavano davanti all’ingresso del Griffin Park con i secchi per raccogliere qualche spicciolo per la squadra. Dell’amore per il calcio locale, familiare e generazionale, tipico di queste parti. E poi tanto merito ce l’ha anche il nuovo presidente.
