[…] Accadde nel febbraio 1997. L’Under-21 era impegnata in una partita importante per le qualificazioni agli Europei di categoria contro l’Inghilterra che si sarebbe disputata il 12 febbraio. L’allora CT degli Azzurrini Rossano Giampaglia (succeduto a Cesare Maldini, passato alla Nazionale maggiore) decise di non convocare Totti che non stava vivendo un buon momento nella sua Roma. Il club giallorosso, complice la sosta per le nazionali, decise di organizzare il Torneo Città di Roma, un triangolare amichevole con Ajax e Borussia Mönchengladbach. Al torneo così partecipò anche lo stesso Totti.

[…] In quel periodo le cose non andavano bene per il giovane talento giallorosso. I rapporti con l’allenatore Carlos Bianchi erano molto tesi e si parlava di una sua possibile cessione in prestito alla Sampdoria. Quel triangolare rappresentava per Totti un’occasione per convincere Bianchi (o almeno la società a cambiare idea). E così fu. Due gol all’Ajax e uno splendido al Borussia.
