“Grazie a Dio per il Football” – Il documentario sulla storia del foot-ball

«Dio benedica il foot-ball» era l’augurio di Lord Arthur Kinnaird, detentore del record ancora imbattuto di nove presenze in finale della F. A. Cup e presidente per più tempo nella storia della Football Association,.

Furono predicatori cristiani acattolici in Regno Unito e cristiani anglicani e protestanti uniti ai Reali di Casa Savoia a portare il football nel panorama pionieristico del calcio torinese e italiano. Approfondite ricerche confermano l’atmosfera cristiana e anticipano gli esordi del gioco del calcio al 1824, a Edimburgo (Scozia), col filantropo John Hope (1807 – 1893), convinto pastore cristiano. John Hope contribuisce a diffondere questo sport nelle università del Regno Unito e ne mette per scritto le prime regole. Lo racconta il libro “The World’s First Football Club (1824): John Hope and the Edinburgh footballers: a story of sport, education and philanthropy”, degli storici John Hutchinson e Andy Mitchell, che Victor Vegan, documentarista teofilosofo ha incontrato di recente a Edimburgo. In Italia, una coppia di predicatori cristiani ha preparato l’ambiente affinché i primi pionieri si potessero conoscere e propagandare il foot-ball: «Senza la coppia protestante formata da Elise Courtial, francese, ed Enrico Schalck, tedesco, probabilmente il foot-ball avrebbe potuto iniziare molti anni dopo».
