GLIEROIDELCALCIO.COM (Marco Cianfanelli) – La squadra messicana, nota con la denominazione Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (U.N.A.M.) la più grande università messicana sita nella capitale Città del Messico, nasce nel 1954. Abbastanza bizzarra la provenienza dei colori del club (blu e oro) ed il soprannome. Essi, infatti, traggono origine dal football americano e precisamente dalla squadra dei Pumas Dorados de la U.N.A.M.

Il felino viene associato alla squadra, invece, per via di alcuni giornalisti messicani che lo mutuarono dalle parole rivolte dall’allenatore della squadra di football Mendez che cercava di motivare i propri giocatori richiamando l’aggressività del Puma. Nel 1962 i Pumas accedono alla massima serie messicana ed è l’inizio di una storia costellata da successi a livello nazionale, con sette campionati messicani, ed internazionali dove la squadra blu e oro ha trionfato per tre volte nella CONCACAF Champions’ Cup ed una nella coppa Interamericana, un trofeo che si disputa tra i vincitori della Champions’ Cup e della sudamericana Coppa Libertadores.

Nel 1963 i Pumas incontrarono in una gara amichevole i catalani del Barcellona facendogli omaggio del gagliardetto nella foto che riportava lo stemma in uso all’epoca con il pallone e la testa di un puma ed i dettagli dell’incontro.

In 1963 the Pumas met the Catalans of Barcelona in a friendly match paying tribute to him with the pennant in the picture that showed the coat of arms in use at the time with the ball and the head of a cougar and the details of the match.
