SPORTSENATORS.IT (Luca Marianantoni) – George Weah, attaccante del Milan, è il primo africano che si aggiudica, grazie al nuovo regolamento, il Pallone d’Oro di France Football. L’asso rossonero precede sul podio il tedesco Jurgen Klinsmann, il finlandese Jari Litmanen, l’azzurro Alex Del Piero e l’olandese Patrick Kluivert.

Nato a Monrovia in Liberia, il 1° ottobre 1966, George Weah è stato il più forte giocatore africano di ogni epoca, il primo e unico ad aggiudicarsi nel 1995 il Pallone d’Oro, quando il premio fu per la prima volta allargato ai calciatori di altri continenti a patto che giocassero in un club europeo.

Centravanti dal fisico potente e dalle ottime doti tecniche, Weah incarna gli enormi progressi compiuti dal calcio africano in pochi anni di storia, storia che fino all’avvento del liberiano aveva come esponentedi punta il camerunense Roger Milla.

Dopo aver fatto fuoco e fiamme nei club locali e nel Tonnerre Yaoundé, società del Camerun, Weah tenta l’avventura in Europa approdando ai francesi del Monaco. Alla corte di Arsène Wenger esplode tutta la sua potenza segnando 47 reti in 102 partite e conquistando la Coppa di Francia del 1991. Nel 1992 passa al Paris Saint-Germain dove vince Campionato, 2 Coppe di Francia e una Coppa di Lega. Poi viene catturato dagli osservatori speciali del Milan che cercano un giocatore in grado di rimpiazzare un certo Marco Van Basten.

Nelle 5 stagioni in rossonero (1995-2000), George Weah vince 2 scudetti segnando 59 gol in 147 partite. Tra tutte la più bella è quella segnata a San Siro l’8 settembre 1996 contro il Verona. Weah va in rete al termine di unica cavalcata solitaria coast-to-coast in cui dribbla 7 giocatori avversari prima di infilare il portiere avversario Gregori.

Chiusa l’esperienza rossonera va in Inghilterra al Chelsea (vince una Coppa d’Inghilterra), prima di passare al Manchester CIty e infine tornare all’Olympique Marsiglia per il canto del cigno.
